History of the Song: អារសាច់ជូនម្ដាយ / Ar Sach Joun Mdy
Translated from Kung Bun Chhouen Memoir's "Golden Love Poem"  by Borisot Khmer

In 1966, I've written a novel with this same title that was published in the newspaper "Sovannaphoum" which I worked as a writer.  In 1970 I became a Chief Editor and a Chief Political Correspondent for this newspaper.

This story was about life in general which was appealing to my readers from all walks of life. That was why in 1967-68, Mr. Ka Chhay Leang (Saravuth) , the Manager of Prasath Meas Movie Production, had contacted me about the rights to this book in order to make a movie based upon the book.

 

Since I was the author of this book, Mr. Leang had requested me to write two songs to be included in the movie.  These songs were: "អារសាច់ជូនម្ដាយ / Ar Sach Joun Mdy" and "រសស្នេហ៍ឧត្ដម / Ros Sneah Udom".

After writing the songs and lyrics, I handed Mr. Has Salan to make musical arrangements and to find a band that will perform these songs.   Mr. Sinn Sisamouth was selected to sing "អារសាច់ជូនម្ដាយ / Ar Sach Joun Mdy".  Mr Samouth and Ms. Ros Serey Sothea were the singers for the duet song "រសស្នេហ៍ឧត្ដម / Ros Sneah Udom".

I remember in the recording process in Ms. Van Chan Studio, Mr. Sinn Sisamouth worked tirelessly in  recorded this song.  It took 11 tries before it was finally completed because the Melody to this song is very high, very difficult to sing.  In the last CODA, Mr. Samouth had to hold and maintain his voice until his heels were off the ground in order to get the correct tone and note. I could see his back was all sweaty during the recording session.  It was Samouth's habit that he would always be shirtless and his hands would be holding a Madeline or "Thros".  This eyes would be glued onto the note sheets that would be situated on the "Porte-Note".

Because this song portrayed negativity of live, of separation in class and of love,  it intrigued and captivated its listeners and became so popular rapidly, especially the adolescence and teenagers.

I have to confess, after this song was recorded, I was uneasy about its release because the song might be  offensive to people and society at the time because the song described society's practices and norm. To write a song that describe such practices might not sit well with people.  But my pen must write the truth, that is why this song flows naturally from my heart to entertain the Khmer listeners with nothing to hold back.

Through the voice of Mr. Sinn Sisamouth, this song is forever remember by the Khmer people till this present day.
